معرفی
Renee Gardner is a Principal Researcher and Docent at the Karolinska Institutet, affiliated with the Department of Global Public Health. She leads the Risk Factors and Mental Disorders – Team Gardner within the Epidemiology of Psychiatric Conditions, Substance use and Social Environment (EPiCSS) research group. Her work bridges epidemiological population-based approaches with molecular analysis of biological samples to investigate early life risk factors for psychiatric disorders.
- Education:
- Ph.D., Environmental Health Sciences, Johns Hopkins University, 2009
- BS, Cell and Molecular Biology, Tulane University, 2004
- BA, Philosophy, Tulane University, 2004
Research Focus:
Renee's research explores how maternal nutrition, metabolic conditions, infections, and inflammation during pregnancy influence offspring risks for autism spectrum disorders, non-affective psychosis, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. She employs Swedish population health registers and neonatal dried blood spot analyses to uncover causal pathways.
Recent Article Trends:
Her 2024-2022 publications span maternal health impacts on child neurodevelopment, including studies on infertility, steroid hormones, acetaminophen use, and intrahepatic cholestasis. These works utilize large-scale cohort studies and biomarker analyses to address familial confounding and environmental interactions in psychiatric conditions.
Grants:
Renee has secured major funding from the Swedish Research Council for projects including:
- Maternal anemia and neurodevelopmental disorders (2023-2025)
- Early life immune function in autism prevention (2021-2024)
- Maternal nutrition and offspring risks (2018-2021)
Labs & Teams:
She co-leads the EPiCSS research group with Emilie Agardh, focusing on maternal risk factors, genetic-environmental interactions, and preventive strategies for mental health disorders using Swedish national register linkages.
