Rene Westerhausen is a Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo, Norway. He previously held roles such as Associate Professor at the same institution and Senior Researcher at the University of Bergen. His academic journey includes a PhD (2006) and Habilitation (2010) from the University of Trier, Germany, and a Diplom degree in Psychology (2003).
His research focuses on cerebral hemispheric asymmetries, interhemispheric interaction, and structural-functional brain associations across the lifespan. Notable areas include dichotic listening paradigms, corpus callosum morphology, and neurodevelopmental influences. He has received awards such as the 2010 Young researcher award and the 2007 Dissertation award.
Education:
- 2010 Habilitation in Psychology, University of Trier
- 2006 PhD in Psychobiology (Dr. rer. nat.), University of Trier
- 2003 Diplom Psychologe, University of Trier
His research spans cognitive neuroscience methodologies including neuroimaging, behavioral studies, and genetic analyses. Over 60 peer-reviewed articles highlight contributions to understanding brain lateralization, aging effects, and clinical applications in schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Key Contributions:
- Leadership in the Lifebrain consortium studying lifespan brain changes
- Advances in dichotic listening paradigms for hemispheric assessment
- Meta-analyses on callosotomy effects and corpus callosum genetics
His work bridges basic and clinical neuroscience, with active collaborations across Europe and North America. Current interests include laterality measurement standards and neuroplasticity mechanisms.
