Rene Gerritsma

Rene Gerritsma is a researcher at the Institute of Physics, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), specializing in quantum simulations with ultracold atoms and ions. Since late 2011, he has led the Quantum, Atomic, and Neutron Physics (QUANTUM) group, supported by an ERC Starting Grant worth EUR 1.5 million. His work focuses on developing hybrid quantum systems to study electron-lattice interactions in solids, leveraging tools from quantum information processing to probe many-body quantum systems and simulate phenomena like high-temperature superconductivity.

• Education: Studied Physics at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and received his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam.
• Postdoctoral Experience: Worked at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information in Innsbruck, Austria.

Gerritsma’s research bridges theoretical proposals by Richard Feynman with experimental systems, aiming to model solids using ytterbium ion crystals and lithium atom gases. This work addresses challenges in simulating lattice vibrations and electron interactions, with potential applications in quantum computing and condensed matter physics.

He collaborates with theoretical physicist Professor Walter Hoffstetter (Goethe University Frankfurt) within the Transregional Collaborative Research Center 49, focusing on variable many-body interactions in condensed matter systems.
