Renato Chemello is a Full Professor in the Department of Earth and Marine Sciences at the University of Palermo, Italy, within the School of Basic and Applied Sciences. He has maintained a consistent academic presence from at least 2014 through 2025, teaching courses in Marine Conservation and Coastal Zone Management for the Marine Biology program and General Ecology for Natural and Environmental Sciences students. His office is located in Room 4 on the 4th floor of the Department building at via Archirafi n. 20.
Professor Chemello's research focuses primarily on Mediterranean marine ecosystems, with particular expertise in vermetid reef ecology, marine conservation, climate change impacts on marine organisms, and marine protected area management. His work demonstrates a strong commitment to understanding vulnerable marine habitats and developing conservation strategies for Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.
His recent publications (2023-2025) reveal a research trajectory centered on climate change impacts on marine organisms, particularly examining thermal tolerance in corals, the ecological consequences of invasive species, and the structural complexity of vermetid reefs. These studies often employ innovative methodologies for assessing habitat vulnerability and developing monitoring frameworks for marine conservation.
Professor Chemello has supervised numerous thesis projects focused on Mediterranean marine ecosystems, with particular emphasis on vermetid reefs, marine protected areas, and coastal zone management. His students have conducted research on topics ranging from vermetid reef characterization to the impacts of human activities on vulnerable marine species.
His academic contributions extend to methodological development for marine ecological assessment, with particular focus on innovative techniques for studying marine habitats, biodiversity assessment, and the impacts of anthropogenic stressors on marine ecosystems. His work bridges fundamental ecological research with practical conservation applications in the Mediterranean context.
