Dr. Renate Hartwig is Assistant Professor of Development Economics at the University of Göttingen and Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute of African Studies. Her research examines family economics, social norms, and health economics in developing contexts, with fieldwork across Burkina Faso, Benin, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi, and Indonesia.
Research focuses:
- Family economics and marriage markets as determinants of social stability
- Impact of religion on fertility and health behaviors
- Political representation and gender-responsive public policies
- Healthcare access in resource-limited settings
Current projects include leading DFG-funded research on COVID-19 vaccination demand in Indonesia (2021-2022) and co-directing the Leibniz Research Alliance project "INFECTIONS in an Urbanizing World" (2021-2025). Her work bridges economic theory with empirical fieldwork to address development challenges.
