Prof. Dr. Renate Buschmann is Professor of Digital Arts and Cultural Mediation at Witten/Herdecke University's WittenLab since 2020, following her directorship at the IMAI Media Art Foundation (2008-2019).
Her academic background includes:
- Studies in Art History, Archaeology, and Pre- and Early History at Cologne and Florence
- Doctorate on the curatorial concept of "between" exhibitions (1969-73) at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf
Buschmann's research centers on time-based and technology-based art, with emphasis on archiving, conservation, and digital accessibility in cultural institutions. She led the BMBF project "Explore/Present/Communicate" (2018-2020) for cataloging moving images and a project on German video art distribution resulting in the book "Video Visions" (2020).
As a curator, she designed the IMAI Foundation's permanent video art exhibition at NRW-Forum (2019) and curated Lutz Mommartz's retrospective (2020). She works within WittenLab, an interdisciplinary future laboratory for fundamental studies.
