Renata Galatolo

Renata Galatolo is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Arts at the University of Bologna and a Visiting Professor at the ICAR laboratory (Université de Lyon) from March to April 2025. She holds a PhD in Semiotics (1999) and advanced degrees in Communication Psychology. Her research focuses on communication dynamics, particularly misunderstandings in interpersonal interactions, medical communication, and conversation analysis in clinical settings. She collaborates on projects like CAPTAIN (medical consultation practices in oncology) and TRAUMA-MIG (psychotrauma and migration narratives). During her visit, she contributes to data analysis in these projects, leveraging expertise in oral narrative analysis and multimodal interaction studies.

Research Interests: Explores ritual interaction, gender roles in communication, doctor-patient dialogue in prosthetics and oncology clinics, and the role of lexical repetition in guiding visually impaired athletes. She employs conversation analysis and semiotic frameworks to study how communication shapes social and clinical practices.

Labs/Teams: Collaborates with ICAR’s research groups on projects analyzing healthcare communication and migration-related psychotrauma. Engaged in interdisciplinary work bridging linguistics, psychology, and healthcare studies.
