Rena Beatrice Alcalay is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society at the Technical University of Munich’s School of Social Sciences and Technology. She is part of the European Research Council-funded Philosophy of Open Science research group, focusing on equitable research practices. Her expertise spans social/applied epistemology, open science, biomedical sciences, and feminist epistemology. Alcalay’s research examines Wittgenstein’s hinge epistemology, exploring its implications for medicine and education, particularly addressing epistemic injustice and groundless stereotypes. She has taught courses such as Cellmates and Medical Epistemology, integrating interdisciplinary approaches to address systemic inequities in academia and healthcare.
Her work bridges philosophy and practical applications, including studies on gender/race gaps in philosophy education and the ethics of open science. She has presented at international conferences, including the Philosophy of Education Society and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s epistemology conference. Alcalay serves as a referee for journals like History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences and holds memberships in organizations such as the American Philosophical Association and Minorities in Philosophy. Her accolades include the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship and multiple grants addressing STEM equity.
