Remo Mombarg is a Professor of Sports Science at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Centre of Expertise Healthy Ageing Healthy Lifestyle, Sports and Physical Activity Sports Education & Youth Sports. His work focuses on motor skills development, physical education, youth sports, and healthy lifestyle interventions, with particular emphasis on children's physical activity and motor competence.
Dr. Mombarg earned his Doctor of Educational Psychology from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in 2007 with research on personal aid for children with learning disabilities in vocational education. Since September 1995, he has maintained an external position at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen while developing his career at Hanze University.
His research spans multiple domains including motor skills development in children, physical education methodologies, youth sports participation, and interventions for healthy aging. Mombarg's work frequently examines the relationship between physical activity, motor competence, and overall health outcomes, with special attention to children with developmental challenges such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD).
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on longitudinal studies of motor competence development in children, systematic reviews of motor and language skills in children with developmental disorders, ecosystem approaches to understanding physical activity, and innovative school-based interventions. His research increasingly incorporates spatial and temporal analysis of children's physical activity patterns and explores intergenerational approaches to promoting healthy lifestyles.
Professor Mombarg leads numerous research projects including PASS (Paden effenen van lokale Actie naar Systeemverandering via Sport en bewegen), Innovatiewerkplaats Kind in de Wijk, and BSLIM (sportieve leefstijlproject: Bewegen voor kinderen, Slim Fit en Gezond). These projects focus on creating systemic change through sport and physical activity, particularly targeting children and youth.
His professional activities include extensive collaboration with schools, sports organizations, and community partners. Mombarg has presented over 122 academic and professional activities, primarily as invited talks and oral presentations, demonstrating his active engagement with both academic and practical communities in the field of sports science and physical education.
