Dr. Remco Knooihuizen is an Assistant Professor in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Arts. His primary affiliations include the Department of Linguistics & English as a Second Language and roles as External Examiner at the University of the Faroe Islands and Board Member of the Algemene Vereniging voor Taalwetenschap (AVT).
He holds a PhD (2009) and M.Sc. (2005) from the University of Edinburgh, specializing in English Language and Medieval Studies, alongside a M.A. in Scandinavian Studies from Groningen (2001). His research focuses on sociolinguistics, sociophonetics, and language contact, with particular emphasis on gender linguistics, Frisian language dynamics, and historical Scandinavian languages like Faroese and Shetland Norn.
Key research projects include sociophonetic analysis of transgender voice change, linguistic aspects of LGBTQ+ identity in Frisian communities, and the influence of English on Dutch. Teaching responsibilities span BA-level courses in sociolinguistics, language variation, and English as a Lingua Franca.
Recent publications (2024–2025) address cognitive impacts of multilingualism in aging populations, intergenerational language transmission in the Netherlands, and perceptual dialectology through cognitive frameworks. His work integrates empirical research with pedagogical innovation, emphasizing student-led projects on language variation and dialect performance.
