Reka Barton is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Maryland’s Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. Her work focuses on multimodality, multilingualism, and multiliteracies in contexts involving Black and Brown communities. Previously, she served as an elementary school teacher in dual language and urban classrooms, with expertise in curriculum design and literacy coaching. She teaches courses like TLPL 652 Multicultural Materials in PK12 Instruction and TLPL 361 Principles and Methods of Teaching. Her research examines sociocultural competence, bilingual education policies, and representation in children’s literature. Notable publications explore the Seal of Biliteracy in higher education, racial justice in multimodal research, and visual analyses of Black and Latinx identities in media. Barton’s work emphasizes equity, cultural capital, and intersectional pedagogical strategies.
