Reina-Marie Loader is Principal Academic in Film Production at Bournemouth University, where she has led practice-based research for more than a decade. She is also founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Media and Rights, an open-access title published by AOSIS that foregrounds scholarship and practice at the intersection of media and human rights.
Education
- PhD in Film Practice, University of Reading, 2011 – thesis on “documemory” and ethical representation of war trauma on screen.
Research & Creative Work
Loader’s research integrates documentary and docudrama practice with activism, exploring how screen storytelling can advance human-rights movements, post-conflict reconciliation and environmental conservation. Extended fieldwork in South Africa on the socio-political value of Ubuntu deeply informs her filmmaking and pedagogy. Her award-winning films have screened and garnered accolades at international festivals, including the Durban International Film Festival.
Impact & Editorial Leadership
As editor-in-chief of the Journal of Media and Rights she curates a global platform for practice-based and practice-led researchers investigating media’s role in rights discourse. She advocates embedding impact-strategy training within university film curricula, evidenced by her 2025 co-authored article on integrating impact producing into film education.
