Reimar Lüst (1925–2020) was a distinguished German physicist and academic leader. He served as Professor at the University of Hamburg from 1992 onward, alongside pivotal roles such as President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1989–1999), Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA, 1984–1990), and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (1963–1972). His career began with a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Chicago and Princeton University (1955–1956).
His research focused on astrophysics, solar physics, plasma physics, and cosmic rays, with contributions to understanding planetary system origins and hydrodynamics.
