Regina Betz is a Lecturer and Head of the Center for Energy and the Environment (CEE) at ZHAW School of Management and Law, Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften. Her work focuses on climate and energy economics, environmental policy, and international energy politics. She holds a Ph.D. in Public Administration from the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer (1999-2003) and a Master's in Economics from the University of Trier (1991-1997).
Her research interests include carbon market governance, renewable energy policies, and the socio-economic dimensions of the energy transition. She leads projects such as the SWEET COSI initiative on Swiss energy system co-evolution and DEcarbonisation of Cities with Renewable Gases (DeCIRRA). She has coordinated international collaborations like the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) at UNSW Sydney (2005-2017).
Her publications span peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Communications Earth & Environment, Energy Economics), books (e.g., Carbon Market Challenge), and policy reports analyzing EU emissions trading, Swiss hydropower reform, and China's energy transition. She actively engages with networks like the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) and the International Association of Energy Economics (IAEE).
Key projects include leadership roles in over 15 initiatives, such as the Negativ Emissions Technologies and AI for automatisation in emissions trading. Her work bridges academic research with policy design, emphasizing participatory governance and social innovation in energy transitions.
