Reggie Gazes serves as Professor of Psychology and Animal Behavior at Bucknell University, teaching in both the Department of Psychology and the interdisciplinary Animal Behavior Program. His academic foundation includes a B.S. in Animal Behavior from Bucknell University (2004), a Ph.D. in Psychology from Emory University (2012), and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Primate Research at Zoo Atlanta (2012-2014).
His research program investigates evolutionary pressures shaping primate cognitive abilities through comparative analyses of learning, memory, and information organization in socially housed human and non-human primates. By examining intra-species and cross-species cognitive variations, his work seeks to identify adaptive advantages of cognitive skills and elucidate origins of human cognition. Key methodologies include social network mapping, physiological stress measurement, and automated touchscreen testing in naturalistic group settings.
Analysis of his 2012-2020 publications reveals consistent focus on capuchin monkeys and great apes, with emerging trends toward integrating demographic variables and seasonal effects into cognitive testing paradigms. His work demonstrates particular expertise in translating complex cognitive phenomena into quantifiable behavioral metrics across diverse primate taxa.
Professor Gazes actively mentors undergraduate researchers, as evidenced by consistent student co-authorship on publications, and directs the Comparative Cognition & Behavior at Bucknell Lab which provides specialized facilities for primate cognition studies.
