Professor Reg Nixon is a full-time faculty member at Flinders University, affiliated with the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work and serving as Interim Director of the Flinders University Institute for Mental Health and Wellbeing. He leads the Posttraumatic Stress Clinic and the Protecting Emergency Responders with Evidence-Based Interventions project.
- Education: PhD, M. Psych (Clinical), and B.A. (Honours) from the University of Sydney.
With over 26 years of experience, Nixon’s research focuses on trauma-related disorders (PTSD, acute stress disorder) and their treatment, particularly through cognitive processing therapy and early intervention strategies. His work addresses trauma from interpersonal violence, accidents, combat, and bereavement, aiming to improve therapies for diverse populations including first responders and military personnel.
Recent publications highlight his work on trauma memory dynamics, cognitive processing therapy optimization, and child trauma recovery. He has 155 research outputs and an h-index of 33.
- Scientific Awards: South Australian Young Tall Poppy Award, Tracy Goodall Early Career Award, and Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
Nixon trains mental health professionals in evidence-based PTSD therapies, collaborates with Open Arms and the Australian Defence Force, and has supervised 16 postgraduate research projects (10 principal, 6 associate). His work aligns with UN SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
