Dr. Refath Farzana is a Researcher at the Walsh Lab and currently serves as a Scientific Project Manager for a Wellcome Trust-funded initiative investigating the impact of COVID-19 on bacterial sepsis, antibiotic usage, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). She holds affiliations with institutions in Bangladesh, Laos, and Sweden through collaborative projects like the BURN Project and One Health initiatives. Her work bridges laboratory research with real-world clinical applications in low- and middle-income countries.
Education includes a PhD in Medicine from Cardiff University (2020), an M.Phil in Medical Microbiology from Dhaka Medical College (2011), and a research fellowship at Uppsala University (2014). Professional recognitions include her Commonwealth Scholarship Commission funding and ISID fellowship.
Research interests focus on the molecular mechanisms of multi-drug resistant (MDR)/extensively drug-resistant (XDR) bacteria, AMR containment strategies, and the epidemiological consequences of antibiotic stewardship in LMICs. She examines how drug-resistant pathogens affect patient outcomes, particularly in burn sepsis cases and transdisciplinary One Health contexts.
She leads projects addressing AMR burden through the BURN Project and global One Health collaborations. Grant involvement includes the Wellcome Trust-funded program analyzing post-COVID-19 AMR dynamics.
Laboratory affiliations include the Walsh Lab at Oxford and teams working on the BURN Project. Her research combines genetic analysis, clinical data, and public health policy to combat AMR spread.
