Rebecca Williamson serves as Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati's School of Architecture and Interior Design within the College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning, where she directs the MS and PhD Programs in Architecture. A registered New York architect with international practice experience including offices of Santiago Calatrava and Livio Vacchini, she holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania under Joseph Rykwert.
- PhD in Architecture, University of Pennsylvania (1998)
- MArch, Virginia Tech (1985)
- BFA in Painting, Rhode Island School of Design (1982)
Her research centers on architectural and urban history/theory with emphasis on form-environment-experience relationships. Williamson investigates historical urban infrastructures, architectural representation, and the politics of urban space through interdisciplinary lenses combining architectural history, cultural studies, and environmental analysis. Her work reveals how seemingly mundane elements like sewers, air quality, and waste systems shape urban experience and architectural discourse.
Williamson's publications demonstrate consistent engagement with European architectural traditions, particularly 18th-century Italy, while addressing contemporary urban challenges. Her recent work explores clutter psychology, urban material flows, and sensory dimensions of city life, reflecting her commitment to connecting historical scholarship with present-day design concerns. The recurring themes across her articles include the hidden narratives of urban infrastructure, gendered spatial practices, and the cultural meanings embedded in architectural materials.
- Harvard University Dumbarton Oaks Summer Fellowship (2011)
- Fulbright Fellowship (1989-1990)
- German Marshall Fund Research Fellowship (1992)
- Salvatori Award for Italian Studies (1993-1995)
Williamson has supervised numerous M.Arch, MS, and PhD theses while developing international academic exchanges between Cincinnati and Parisian institutions including École Spéciale d'Architecture. Her research leadership extends to multi-institutional projects like the Sustainable Mobility and Metropolitan Areas initiative connecting Bordeaux, Cincinnati, and Curitiba. She maintains active collaboration with European research centers through invited presentations and editorial work, particularly focusing on urban infrastructure and architectural pedagogy.
Her international research collaborations include the Sustainable Mobility and Metropolitan Areas project involving Bordeaux's ENSAP and Brazil's UFPR, alongside faculty development grants examining urban pedagogies. Williamson's studio teaching connects students with Cincinnati's Metropolitan Sewer District and underserved neighborhoods, creating direct engagement with urban agencies and residents.
