Rebecca Sears is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics at Washington University in St. Louis. She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and previously taught at Tulane University, Wake Forest University, and the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on ancient music, papyrology, Latin poetry (particularly Ovid’s Metamorphoses), and ancient magic. She is currently writing a textbook on Greek and Roman music for the University of Michigan Press. Sears is also a violinist who performs in benefit concerts, blending her passion for classical music and scholarship.
Her recent courses include Ancient Greek and Roman Music, exploring the role of music in antiquity through literary and archaeological sources. She has published widely on musical papyri and ancient magic, including articles in the Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists and contributions to edited volumes. In 2024, she was elected to a leadership role in the Society for Classical Studies and played a key role in a Bowdoin College exhibition.
Sears’ work bridges scholarly research and public engagement, with a focus on reconstructing ancient musical practices and their cultural contexts.
