Rebecca Searle is a Principal Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Brighton, where she is also Deputy Director of the Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics. She is the Course Leader for BA Politics and Social Change and leads initiatives in community-engaged research and teaching. Her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary political and social challenges, particularly the housing crisis in Britain.
Her educational background includes a PhD, MA, and BA in Contemporary History from the University of Sussex. She was awarded an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award and a Paul Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University.
Her research interests include contemporary British history, the history of housing, economic and social history, the politics of twentieth and twenty-first century Britain, the history of gender and sexuality, and the societal impact of war. She emphasizes community collaboration and public engagement, believing that academic work should directly contribute to solving global challenges.
Her recent publications focus on the housing crisis, wartime propaganda, and historical economic indicators. The works show a consistent trend in using historical analysis to understand current social and political issues, particularly inequality, housing, and public policy. Her research often involves interdisciplinary methods and community co-production.

Rebecca supervises students in contemporary British history and related disciplines. She has led and contributed to externally funded projects, including the ESRC-funded Global Income Inequality Project and the Civic Power Fund-supported community development initiative. She is actively involved in knowledge exchange through public talks, policy collaborations, and community partnerships such as the Brighton and Hove Land Trust and the Brighton and Hove Common Ambition project.
She established and coordinates the Housing Forum, which brings together academics, community organizations, and policymakers to develop local solutions to the housing crisis. She also contributes to the Brighton and Hove Common Ambition project, focusing on co-producing homeless health services with people who have lived experience of homelessness.
