Dr. Rebecca Noone is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Digital Media and Information Studies at the University of Glasgow’s School of Humanities. Her research critically examines locative media technologies like digital mapping platforms, focusing on how everyday navigation practices intersect with corporate spatial narratives. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, postdoctoral experience at UCL, and has conducted fieldwork in Toronto, Amsterdam, London, and New York. Her book Location Awareness in the Age of Google Maps (Routledge, 2024) challenges assumptions about 'digital dependency' through participatory methodologies combining art and critical theory.
Her work employs feminist approaches to investigate spatial data governance, including studies on geofencing, location data commodification, and algorithmic moderation of user-generated content. Collaborative projects include analyses of Google Maps Local Guides’ spatial power dynamics and the impact of location data on reproductive healthcare access. Methodologically, she integrates visual ethnography, creative research practices, and platform studies frameworks.
Recent publications explore topics like data violence in reproductive healthcare landscapes, geofence-driven privacy erosion, and pedagogical challenges in librarianship during information crises. No formal awards are listed, but her interdisciplinary contributions bridge media studies, sociology, and digital humanities. She maintains an active artistic practice alongside academic work, emphasizing embodied spatial experiences.
