Rebecca Nagel is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Classics, & Religion at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts. She concurrently serves as Associate Dean (Undergraduate) for the Faculty of Arts, holding this position from July 2021 onward and previously from 2015-2020. She holds a PhD from Harvard University and a BA from the University of Toronto.
Her research focuses on the relationship between writers and their literary sources, particularly Roman authors like Horace and Statius. She has extensively analyzed classical influences in English literature, notably exploring Virginia Woolf’s engagement with Greek texts and Vita Sackville-West’s poetic works. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges classical studies with modernist literature, environmental writing, and translation studies.
Dr. Nagel has published widely in refereed journals including Classical World, Phoenix, and Mouseion, with a focus on Latin poetry and classical reception in contemporary contexts. She organized the 2008 Classical Association of the Canadian West conference on 'Commemoration in Antiquity' and served as Associate Editor (Latin Poetry) for Phoenix (2007–2014).
Her academic service includes roles as Associate Chair Undergraduate (2009–2012) and Director of Classics (2005–2008), alongside committee leadership across the University of Alberta. Her publications span classical intertextuality, modernist literary analysis, and the enduring impact of Greco-Roman traditions on English literature.
