Rebecca McKean is an Associate Professor of Geology at St. Norbert College. Her research focuses on vertebrate paleontology with specialties in sedimentology and plesiosaurs, studying fossil preservation (taphonomy) in Utah's Tropic Shale. She actively involves undergraduates in fieldwork and lab research, leading expeditions across Wisconsin, Arizona, Utah, South Dakota, and Nicaragua. McKean maintains a fossil prep lab in the Gehl-Mulva Science Center for specimen analysis.
- Education & Training: Undergraduate experience at St. Norbert College influenced her commitment to student-faculty collaboration.
- Key Research Sites: Tropic Shale in southern Utah, with fieldwork targeting vertebrate fossils like plesiosaurs, fish, sharks, and turtles.
Her interdisciplinary approach combines geological and paleontological methods to reconstruct ancient environments. McKean emphasizes hands-on learning through field trips and laboratory work, reflecting her dedication to undergraduate research mentorship.
