Dr. Rebecca Marchiel is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Mississippi, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of History. She specializes in U.S. political and urban history, with a focus on the history of American capitalism.
- Education: M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Northwestern University (2008, 2014).
Her research investigates the intersection of financial systems and social justice, particularly in urban contexts. She explores the rise of affordable housing policy, housing discrimination, and financial exploitation post-civil rights victories.
Dr. Marchiel’s work includes her 2020 book After Redlining, which analyzes the urban reinvestment movement amid financial deregulation, and a 2021 Washington Post article on anti-redlining strategies. Her scholarship emphasizes grassroots activism and policy evolution.
- Scientific Awards: Fellowship from Harvard University’s Charles Warren Center (2015-2016).
Prior to joining the University of Mississippi in 2015, Dr. Marchiel taught at Franklin and Marshall College. She maintains office hours in Bishop Hall and contributes to courses on U.S. history, economic history, and urban studies.
