Rebecca D. Christensen

Rebecca D. Christensen serves as Director of Engaged Learning and Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. She teaches Project Community and Intergroup Relations courses while developing community-based learning pathways for Sociology students across Southeast Michigan.

Her expertise centers on community-academic partnerships, with deep specialization in intergroup dialogue frameworks and urban community engagement. Christensen designs curricula connecting sociological theory to practical community work, particularly focusing on diversity initiatives and inclusive learning environments in higher education settings. Her approach integrates psychological counseling principles with sociological analysis to address systemic community challenges.

Christensen maintains active leadership in the Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP) and Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR), having previously contributed to the Center for Engaged Academic Learning (CEAL) and Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) during her doctoral studies. Her work consistently bridges academic scholarship with community action through structured experiential learning models.

She identifies and cultivates community partnerships that provide Sociology students with hands-on learning opportunities while addressing local needs. Prior to her current role, she directed diversity initiatives at University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and provided counseling services at Hunter College, Columbia University, and UC Berkeley, where she co-founded the Oakland Youth Aspire non-profit organization.
