Rebecca Cassidy is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research focuses on the intersections of capitalism, gambling, political ecology, and multispecies relationships. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (1999), an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (1995), and a BA in Social Anthropology from the same institution (1994).
Her work critically examines the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of gambling, particularly the influence of corporations and governments. Notable projects include a Leverhulme-funded study on fruit and orchards, and an ERC-funded project on gambling in Europe. She has authored influential books like Vicious Games: Capitalism and Gambling (2020) and co-edited volumes on qualitative gambling research and domestication.
Cassidy’s research highlights the normalization of gambling and its impact on youth, inequality, and public policy. Her advocacy extends to media engagements and policy briefs, including contributions to UK parliamentary debates. Awards include the Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship and an ERC Starting Grant.
Her research lab and teams collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, blending anthropology with public health and policy analysis. Key grants include funding from the Leverhulme Trust and European Research Council.
