Rebecca Bedell is the Margaret Clapp Distinguished Alumna Professor of Art at Wellesley College, specializing in American art and visual culture. Her academic work bridges art history with interdisciplinary themes such as science, ecology, and sentimentality.
- Education: B.A. from Wellesley College, M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University.
Her research explores the intersection of art and science, ecocritical approaches to art history, and the cultural significance of sentimentalism in American art. She also investigates landscape imagery and its connections to geological science, as well as Disney’s role in shaping visual culture.
Recent projects include the book Moved to Tears: Rethinking the Art of the Sentimental in the United States (2018), which redefines sentimental art’s role in American cultural history, and the edited volume The Anatomy of Nature: Geology and American Landscape Painting, 1825-1875 (2001). She co-curated the exhibition Endless Forms: Charles Darwin, Natural Science and the Visual Arts (2009), highlighting art-science dialogues.
