Rebecca Böhme is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV), Linköping University, and affiliated with the Center for Social and Affective Neuroscience (CSAN). Her research focuses on understanding how the brain and body generate the perception of 'self' and differentiate it from 'other', particularly in psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia and ADHD.
Using advanced methodologies such as fMRI, fNIRS, behavioral measurements, and psychophysics, Böhme investigates the neural mechanisms underlying self-other recognition. Her recent studies explore altered sensory processing in psychosis, the role of heartbeats in self-social touch distinction, and the impact of pharmacological interventions like ketamine on affective touch perception.
Her work has gained significant media attention, especially during the pandemic, for highlighting the critical role of touch in human connection and well-being. Böhme’s research group at CSAN is actively engaged in three projects examining pharmacological modulation of self-other distinction, self-perception in schizophrenia, and simultaneous brain-spinal cord imaging to identify neural differences in touch processing.
