Rayna Kalas is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on 16th- and 17th-century literature, poetics, and the history and theory of writing. She authored Frame, Glass, Verse: The Technology of Poetic Invention in the English Renaissance (2007), examining poetic craft and its material metaphors. Currently, she is writing a book on constitutionalism and writing in early modern England and the Americas, exploring themes like utopian writing and professional writing's rise.
She teaches courses on Shakespeare, Milton, literature and technology, tragicomedy, transatlantic early modern literature, and political theory. Her work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary fields like visual studies and media history.
Research Interests: Early Modern Literature, Media Studies, Poetics, Literature and Technology, Visual Studies, Political Theory.
Teaching: Courses include ENGL 3901 (Utopia), ENGL 6815 (Poiesis), ENGL 3290 (Milton: Political Revolution and Paradise Lost), and ENGL 4930 (Honors Essay Tutorial I).
