Raymond W. Redline, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Department of Reproductive Biology at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine. He also serves as an Attending Physician at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. His research focuses on placental developmental mechanisms and their role in pregnancy disorders, particularly standardizing diagnostic criteria for placental lesions and linking placental pathology to adverse outcomes. Key roles include leadership in placental pathology research and clinical diagnostics.
Education: MD from Boston University School of Medicine (1979), BA from Brown University (1975). Postdoctoral training includes Immunology at Harvard Medical School (1988) and Gynecologic/Perinatal Pathology fellowships at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (1985). Board certifications in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology and Pediatric Pathology.
Research Interests: Mechanisms of fetal protection in the uterus, placental injury patterns, and placental pathology's role in pregnancy complications. Recent work emphasizes diagnostic standardization and linking placental lesions to outcomes like fetal brain injury and stillbirth.
Articles: Over 135 publications, including seminal work on placental injury classification, SARS-CoV-2 placental effects, and fetal brain injury pathways. Key journals include American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Experimental Neurology.
Teaching & Grants: Active in medical education, with contributions to textbooks and pathology training programs. Involved in grants related to placental biology and obstetric disease taxonomy.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams studying placental pathology, including work at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and international partnerships through the Amsterdam Consensus.
