His research spans applied and basic aquatic ecology, focusing on trophic relations, littoral zones, and invasive species. Current projects involve hybrid watermilfoil distribution studies, alum treatment impacts on macrophytes, and seagrass mapping in coastal lagoons using sonar/photographs. Past work explored milfoil-weevil biocontrol interactions and herbicide efficacy for curlyleaf pondweed.
Notable publications include interdisciplinary studies on hybrid watermilfoil genotyping (2022), herbicide impacts on native flora (2020), and foundational biocontrol research (1999-2008). He received the 2019 Outstanding JAPM Article award and leads the MAISRC-Newman research team.
