Raymond A. Shaw

Raymond A. Shaw is University Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Physics at Michigan Technological University. He holds a joint appointment in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and leads the Cloud Physics Laboratory. Dr. Shaw's research focuses on atmospheric physics, particularly cloud microphysical processes, turbulence impacts on droplet growth, and ice nucleation mechanisms.

His experimental work utilizes digital holography for particle tracking in laboratory clouds and field measurements. Recent investigations examine haze-cloud interactions, entrainment-mixing processes, and aerosol effects on cloud formation. Professor Shaw develops advanced instrumentation including the Pi Cloud Chamber for controlled atmospheric simulations.

His recent publications demonstrate innovations in convection-cloud chamber methodologies, large-eddy simulations with bin microphysics, and field campaigns like ESCAPE. Research consistently addresses fundamental processes governing cloud droplet size distributions and growth transitions.

Dr. Shaw supervises graduate students in atmospheric sciences and contributes to the development of novel measurement techniques. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Pennsylvania State University.
