Ray Smith is an Extension Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. His extension activities involve collaboration with county agents and producers, applied forage research, conference organization, and authoring extension publications. His research focuses on legume establishment in pastures, hay production, grazing trials, and forage variety testing.
Educational background includes a Ph.D. in Agronomy from the University of Georgia (1991), an M.S. in Agronomy (1987), and a B.S. in Biology from Asbury College (1983).
Research interests span forage systems, pasture ecology, agricultural modeling, and sustainable crop management. His work integrates field experiments with computational approaches to improve agricultural productivity.
Awards and honors include 12 scientific recognitions, such as the Medallion Award and multiple merit awards from agricultural councils. His outreach contributions were acknowledged through the University of Manitoba Outreach Award.
Advising and mentorship: Major advisor for 18 Master's candidates and 4 Doctoral candidates, with service on 37 Master's and 10 Doctoral committees. Supervised 26 undergraduate research projects and 8 internships.
