Ravichandran Guruswami

Ravichandran Guruswami is the John E. Goode Jr. Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), holding the Otis Booth Leadership Chair in the Division of Engineering & Applied Science. He has held leadership roles including Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories (GALCIT) and has been affiliated with institutions globally, including the Indian Institute of Science and Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research focuses on mechanics of materials, cell mechanics, experimental methods, and failure analysis.

Education: PhD and MS in Engineering from Brown University (USA). He has pioneered experimental techniques in material characterization and has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Warner T. Koiter Medal and membership in the US National Academy of Engineering. His work bridges mechanics, materials science, and biomedical engineering, with contributions to granular materials, thin films, and cellular biomechanics.

Publications highlight innovations in imaging and stress analysis, including diffraction-assisted 3D surface profiling and novel methods for measuring micro-scale deformation. His experimental approaches have advanced understanding of material behavior under dynamic conditions.
