Ravi Pendakur is a Full Professor at the University of Ottawa's School of Public and International Affairs, specializing in sociology and public policy. His research focuses on diversity, immigrant integration, social capital, and socioeconomic outcomes of ethnic and linguistic groups in Canada and other settler societies. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Carleton University (1996), an M.E.S. in Environmental Studies from York University (1987), and a B.A. in Sociology and Geography from the University of British Columbia (1983).
Before joining academia, he spent 18 years in federal government roles, including positions in Multiculturalism and Citizenship, Canadian Heritage, and Human Resources and Social Development. His teaching includes courses on quantitative research methods for public policy and immigration diversity.
Research interests include the interplay between social capital, residential segregation, and economic outcomes for minorities. Key areas include refugee integration, Indigenous economic disparities, and policy impacts on immigrant labor markets. His work employs quantitative methods using census data and specialized surveys.
Recent publications analyze parliamentary debates on immigration, Afghan immigrant labor outcomes, and the socioeconomic effects of self-government agreements for Indigenous communities. He collaborates frequently with scholars like Pieter Bevelander and Krishna Pendakur.
