Ravi Mural is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science at South Dakota State University. His research focuses on enhancing sustainable crop production through genomics, quantitative genetics, and breeding, with a current emphasis on sorghum, maize, and cereals. He aims to bridge genotype-phenotype gaps by integrating large-scale biological data including phenomics, genomics, and transcriptomics.
Key research areas include unraveling genetic architectures of agronomic traits, investigating genotype-environment interactions, and employing high-throughput phenotyping with sensors and imaging. The Mural Lab collaborates across disciplines (animal science, statistics, computer science) to advance breeding strategies and precision agriculture solutions.
Recent work highlights applications of machine learning in crop trait analysis, drought tolerance mechanisms in plants, and scalable IoT systems for agricultural monitoring. The lab’s future plans include expanding research to millets and pulse crops.
Advising emphasizes training students in quantitative genetics and big data analytics. Collaborations focus on interdisciplinary projects merging computational methods with field-based crop science.
