Ravi Balasubramanian is an Associate Professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University. His research pioneers 'simultaneous bio-inspiration and robo-inspiration', developing robotic systems inspired by human biomechanics while using robotic models to advance human rehabilitation.
Key innovations include implantable passive mechanisms to enhance tendon-transfer surgeries and restore hand function. The lab designs robotic hands based on human grasping principles and develops benchmarks for manipulation capabilities. Research integrates biomechanics, mechanism design, and control systems.
Dr. Balasubramanian directs the Robotics & Human Control Systems Lab and has received multiple honors including an NSF CAREER Award and IEEE best paper recognition. Current projects focus on orthopedic implants to modify force transmission in musculoskeletal systems.
