Raphael F. Garcia

Raphael F. Garcia is a Professor at the Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO), part of the University of Toulouse in France. As corresponding author of significant research in planetary seismology, he leads investigations into methods for detecting seismic activity on Venus.

His research focuses on planetary seismology and Venus exploration, with particular expertise in seismic wave detection technologies. Professor Garcia examines three primary approaches: ground-based sensors that face challenges due to Venus's extreme surface conditions, balloon-based infrasound sensors operating in more temperate atmospheric layers, and orbital airglow imagers detecting atmospheric emissions perturbed by seismic activity.

His recent work analyzes the capabilities of these different measurement techniques against current estimates of Venus seismicity, providing critical guidance for future mission concepts. The research demonstrates that ground sensors are limited by short measurement duration and atmospheric noise, balloon sensors require extended mission durations to be effective for smaller quakes, while airglow imagers can detect larger magnitude events over longer observation periods.

Professor Garcia maintains extensive international collaborations with researchers from institutions across Germany, France, Norway, UK, Switzerland, and the USA, reflecting the global nature of planetary science research.

His work addresses a critical gap in planetary science - the lack of understanding about Venus's interior structure.
