Ranu Basu is a Professor at York University's Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, specializing in urban geographies of marginality, anti-imperialism, and social justice. Her work bridges education, migration, and geopolitical dynamics across Canada, Cuba, and India.
Education: PhD (Human Geography, University of Toronto), MA (Human Geography, University of Toronto), BA (Geography, University of Bombay).
Research: Explores urbanization, forced migration, and critical spatial methodologies. Current projects include a SSHRC-funded study on subalterity in education and welfare cities (Havana, Toronto, Kolkata) and a working group on education for peace.
Awards & Affiliations: Long-term roles at the Centre for Refugee Studies, York Centre for Education and Community, and SSHRC grants. Recognized as a John A. Sproul Fellow and Visiting Scholar at the University of Havana and UC Berkeley.
