Ranko Popadić is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Belgrade, specializing in wood processing, particularly sawmill technology and wood properties. He has been teaching courses related to wood processing at sawmills since 1996 and has also taught at the Faculty of Forestry in Banja Luka and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sarajevo.
Dr. Popadić earned his doctoral degree in 2014 from the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade with a dissertation on "Research into the influence of the diameter and quality of beech roundwood on the quantity of main and secondary products in sawmill wood processing." He previously completed his master's thesis in 2006 on "The influence of the basics of primary sawing on the utilization of beech roundwood and the assortment structure of sawn timber."
His primary research interests focus on sawmill processing methods, particularly for beech wood, as well as wood drying, veneer production, and wood properties. A significant portion of his work examines the influence of log quality and diameter on sawmill yield and product structure. His research also extends to poplar and fir processing, and theoretical aspects of sawmill technology.
Dr. Popadić's recent publications demonstrate a growing focus on thermal modification of wood, with numerous studies examining how heat treatment affects wood properties, color, and moisture content. His work spans practical sawmill applications to more theoretical investigations of wood science, reflecting his dual expertise in both engineering and material science aspects of wood processing.
Dr. Popadić actively participates in the academic community as a reviewer for international and domestic journals and serves on the organizing and program committee of the conference "Wood Industry and Forestry of Serbia." He is also a member of the Assembly of the Chamber of Forestry Engineers of Serbia. Previously, he served on the editorial board of the journal Prerada drveta.
His professional activities include measurement and assessment of sawn timber quality, determination of various standards in sawmill processing, and collaboration with industry. At the University of Belgrade, he participates in various bodies, commissions, and councils related to his field of expertise.
