Ranga Raju Vatsavai

Ranga Raju Vatsavai is a Chancellor's Faculty Excellence Program Cluster Professor in Geospatial Analytics and Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. He also serves as Associate Director of the Center for Geospatial Analytics, guiding the center's strategic vision for spatial computing research.

Dr. Vatsavai earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota in 2008 and 2003, respectively. His professional journey includes significant roles at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (2006-2014), IBM Research (2004-2006), University of Minnesota (1999-2004), AT&T Labs (1998), and Center for Development of Advanced Computing in India (1995-1998).

His research lies at the intersection of spatial and temporal big data, analytics, and high-performance computing with applications spanning national security, geospatial intelligence, natural resource management, climate change, location-based services, and human terrain mapping. His work demonstrates a strong focus on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to geospatial problems, particularly in remote sensing imagery processing, cloud imputation, crop classification, and conversational AI systems. The research trajectory shows increasing sophistication in deep learning approaches applied to geospatial challenges, with a clear emphasis on practical applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, and security domains.

Dr. Vatsavai has secured significant research funding from agencies including NSF, IARPA, DOE, and the US Department of Energy, with major projects like the STEPS Center ($19.5M), PIPP Phase I ($1M), and IARPA SMART program. His research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications and two edited books on knowledge discovery from sensor data.

He has made substantial contributions to the academic community through service on program committees for leading international conferences including ACM KDD, AAAI, ACM GIS, ECML/PKDD, ICDM, SDM, CIKM, IEEE BigData, WACV, and has co-chaired several workshops including ICDM/SSTDM, ICDM/KDCloud, and ACM SIGSPATIAL BigSpatial.
