Randy Ellis is a Professor at Queen's University, with primary appointment in the School of Computing and cross-appointments in the Departments of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Surgery, and Biomedical and Molecular Sciences. He holds the Queen's Research Chair in Computer-Assisted Surgery. His research focuses on biomedical electronics, data analytics, and medical imaging, particularly in orthopedic surgery and advanced healthcare delivery.
Education: PhD in 1987 from the University of Massachusetts. Notable previous roles include Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School (2004–2006) and Stanley and Doreen Heaps Research Chair at St. Francis Xavier University (2012). He is a Fellow of ASME and IEEE.
Research Interests: Computer-assisted surgery, medical data analysis, and advanced healthcare delivery systems. He leads a multidisciplinary group funded by CIHR, CFI, and NSERC, collaborating with industry partners like Northern Digital and GE Healthcare.
Awards: Queen's Research Chair, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship (2012), and multiple visiting professorships globally.
Labs/Teams: Directs Queen's University's Computer-Assisted Surgery research group and contributes to the Centre for Health Innovation. His work integrates robotics, haptic interfaces, and machine learning for surgical applications.
