Randy A. Hertz is the Vice Dean for Curriculum and the Fiorello LaGuardia Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. He joined NYU Law in 1985 as part of the inaugural clinical tenure track. His research focuses on habeas corpus, lawyering theory, and criminal justice. Hertz holds a JD from Stanford Law School (1979) and a BA from Carleton College (1976).
He has authored seminal works including a two-volume treatise on habeas corpus and co-authored trial manuals for criminal and juvenile defense attorneys. As editor-in-chief of the Clinical Law Review, he has advanced clinical legal education. His teaching includes the Juvenile Defender Clinic and courses on criminal litigation.
Award-winning educator, Hertz has received accolades such as the Podell Distinguished Teaching Award (2010) and the William Pincus Award (2004). He directs the Derrick Bell Lecture Series on Race in American Society and has practiced as a public defender, clerked for Chief Justice Robert F. Utter, and contributed to landmark legal reforms.
