Randall Halle is the Klaus W. Jonas Professor of German Film and Cultural Studies at the University of Pittsburgh's Department of German, affiliated with the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. He also serves as Director of the European Studies Center. His research focuses on transnational cinema, European cultural politics, queer theory, and film policy. Halle holds a PhD, MA, and BS in German Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His major works include Visual Alterity: Seeing Difference in Cinema (2021) and The Europeanization of Cinema (2014). He has been awarded Fulbright and NEH grants, including the G. Graydon Curtis Excellence in Teaching Award (2002).
Research interests explore 'The Reason of Europe' as a dis/union discourse and '(Un)Popular Culture' through visual studies. His recent articles analyze post-neoliberal German cinema, material film aesthetics of 1968 protests, and European cultural policy frameworks.
Halle's grants include NEH fellowships and DAAD support. His interdisciplinary work bridges film studies with European integration debates, queer theory, and transnational cultural production.
