Professor Randall Goldsmith leads the Goldsmith Group at the University of Wisconsin–Madison's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research focuses on single-molecule techniques, nanophotonics, and quantum information science, leveraging advanced instrumentation like anti-Brownian electrokinetic (ABEL) traps and microbubble resonators. He explores topics including protein folding dynamics, photovoltaic materials, and cavity-enhanced spectroscopy. His work spans interdisciplinary areas such as chemical catalysis, biophysical systems, and topological photonics, supported by a DOE-funded Center for Molecular Quantum Transduction.
Key research themes include studying intrinsically disordered proteins (e.g., tau linked to Alzheimer’s), developing solution-phase microresonator technologies, and advancing CVD methods for photonic crystals. Goldsmith has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have graduated between 2016 and 2025. His lab collaborates on projects like quantum transduction, plasmonic-photonic hybrid systems, and photothermal imaging.
Recent efforts target applications in single-molecule sensitivity, label-free detection, and understanding molecular interactions at ultra-low concentrations. The group’s innovations in optical trapping and microresonator design aim to address challenges in materials science, biochemistry, and quantum technologies. Madison’s academic environment and proximity to Lake Isthmus further enhance collaborative opportunities.
