Ran Duan is an Assistant Professor at the Reynolds School of Journalism (University of Nevada, Reno). Her work intersects environmental, science, and risk communication, with a focus on visual literacy and public engagement with crises like wildfires and climate change.
- Teaching: Data Journalism (JOUR 419/619), Risk Communication (JOUR 436/636), Mass Communication Research Methods (JOUR 435/635), Media Engagement and Innovation (JOUR 755).
- Education: Ph.D. in Media and Information (Environmental Science and Policy), Michigan State University; Master’s and Bachelor’s in Journalism (Michigan State & Shandong University).
Her research explores visual communication strategies in climate change and environmental crises, including construal level theory, protection motivation theory, and media effects. Recent articles examine the finite pool of worry hypothesis, visual literacy scales, and the interplay between COVID-19 and climate change in news coverage.

She serves as Secretary for the Risk Communication Division of the Society for Risk Analysis (2023–present) and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences (2024–present).
