Dr. Ramie Gougeon is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of West Florida, where he also serves as Director of the Archaeology Institute. He is affiliated with the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities and is actively engaged in research and teaching in anthropological and archaeological theory, gender, and Southeastern prehistory.

Dr. Gougeon's research centers on household archaeology, gender, power structures in middle-range societies, and architectural pattern languages in prehistory. He investigates the lifeways of Native groups in the Pensacola region before and after Spanish contact, collaborating with Dr. John Worth to explore ethnic identity and the impacts of cultural contact. His work critically examines epistemological foundations in archaeological interpretations, particularly in gender analogies.
His professional leadership includes serving as Past President of the Florida Archaeological Council and current Secretary of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference. These roles reflect his active contribution to the broader archaeological community in the region.

Dr. Gougeon advises students and integrates research into fieldwork and classroom teaching. His prior experience in both academic and contract archaeology enriches his applied and theoretical perspectives. He has taught at the University of Georgia, Kennesaw State University, Brenau University, and served as a visiting assistant professor at Western Carolina University.
He is involved with research centers including the Archaeology Institute, the Marine Research Center, and the Florida Public Archaeology Network at UWF, contributing to interdisciplinary and public-facing archaeological initiatives.
