Ralph M. Rosen is the Vartan Gregorian Professor of the Humanities and Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on Greek literature, ancient comedy, satire, and medicine with particular expertise in Hippocrates, Galen, and Aristophanes. He holds an MA and PhD from Harvard University and a BA from Swarthmore College.
Affiliations & Leadership: Co-founder and Director of Penn’s Center for Ancient Studies (1996–present), co-organizer of the Penn-Leiden Colloquia on Ancient Values (2000–2011), former Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in SAS (2008–13, 2018–19), and former President of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States (2019–20). He has held leadership roles in the American Philological Association and Society for Ancient Medicine and Pharmacy.
Research Interests: Explores intersections between ancient comedy’s political satire and medical texts. Specializes in analyzing Aristophanes’ social critiques and the philosophical underpinnings of Galen’s medical writings. Engages with reception studies through works like Hip Sublime, linking classical traditions to 20th-century literature.
Publications: Major works include Oxford Handbook of Galen (2024), Aristophanes and Politics (2020), and foundational studies on ancient satire. Ongoing projects address Hippocratic/Galenic texts and Old Comedy’s iambographic roots.
