Ralph A. Litzinger is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Duke University's Department of Cultural Anthropology. He is also affiliated with the Duke Global Health Institute. His research focuses on ethnicity, nationalism, post-socialism in China, environmental activism, labor rights, and migrant education. He holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Washington (1994), an M.A. (1990), and a B.A. (1985).
His seminal work Other Chinas: The Yao and the Politics of National Belonging (2000) explores minority intellectuals' roles in shaping post-socialist China. Recent projects include studies on labor conditions in Apple's supply chain, environmental NGOs, and migrant education in Beijing. He co-edited Ghost Protocols: Development and Displacement in Global China (2016) and is currently working on Migrant Futures: Education and Labor in Global China.
Dr. Litzinger has held leadership roles, including directing Duke’s Asia/Pacific Studies Institute (2001–2007) and the Duke Engage Migrant Education project (2008–2015). He co-founded Dream Corp International and Duke East Asian NEXUS. His awards include the Howard Johnson Excellence in Teaching Award (2013) and the Duke Engage Mentoring Award (2013).
He teaches courses on global Apple’s labor practices, environmental health in China, and digital surveillance. His research bridges anthropology with transnational activism, emphasizing marginalized communities' agency in global systems.
