His publications reveal a consistent interest in how cultural identity, religious practice, and political structures intersect in Islamic societies throughout history.
Elger has contributed significantly to reference works including multiple entries for the Encyclopaedia of Islam, THREE, and has published extensively on early modern Arabic literature and travel writing. His scholarly output shows a clear progression from early work on Moroccan scholarly networks to more recent focus on biographical entries and analysis of specific Islamic scholars and texts from the Ottoman period.
His editorial work includes significant contributions such as A Short Encyclopedia of Islam (2001, updated 2008, revised 2018) and co-editing The Piety of Learning: Islamic Studies in Honor of Stefan Reichmuth (2017).
